Is there anything more daunting than the thought of tackling finances? Financial health is just as important as physical health, mental health, and relationship health—in fact, financial health affects each one of those! This week, I spoke with Crusaders 4 Change founder and CEO Shay Cook. Shay is a financial counselor who provides one-on-one financial coaching as well as group presentations to empower people take control of their finances.
With tax season about to start and the prospect of new stimulus checks on the way, having a plan is key to whipping your finances into shape. Where do you start? Shay Cook's finance philosophy (based on the acronym M.O.N.E.Y.) offers an overall approach, but in our chat, Shay tells me the one thing you have to do before you can get started on planning your financial goals.
Watch the full video below, but, first, here are a couple of highlights from our chat:
Shay's #WIPMondays action step:
Shay works with people to develop a spend plan to meet their financial goals, but the first step is to know your numbers!
Shay also passed along her favorite personal finance websites: www.PowerPay.org, www.FINRA.org, and www.ConsumerFinance.gov. You can follow the C4C blog here, and for a free 30-minute Clarity Call one-on-one with Shay Cook, sign-up here.
What we're reading:
A lot! Shay's #bookstack is tall! She's reading The Bible cover to cover. She's also reading The Financial Diaries: How American Families Cope in a World of Uncertainty, by Jonathan Morduch and Rachel Schneider; Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents, by Isabel Wilkerson; Exposing the Spiritual Roots of Disease: Powerful Answers to Your Questions About Healing and Disease Prevention, by Henry W. Wright and Joe Geoffrey (not pictured). My next read is Transcendent Kingdom, by Yaa Gyasi. I have both of Gyasi's books and will be reading her debut, Homegoing, for book club later this year.
